The birth of the soils<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

From the first traces of limestone deposited as marine sediments 50 million years ago to the light clay that emerged in more recent millennia, our <\/span>Bordeaux terroirs<\/b>have been shaped since time immemorial. And yet the geological formations that make up the Bordeaux vineyards are some of the youngest in France!<\/span>
This turbulent history, which <\/span>spans tectonic uplifts, massive gravel deposits, and successive glaciations,<\/b>was just the start\u2026<\/span> Producing wines that express their terroir required the unremitting efforts of many generations of winegrowing families.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The expansion of the vineyards<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The first vines were planted by the <\/span>Bituriges Vivisci<\/b>, the Celtic tribes who founded <\/span>Burdigala<\/a>, which would become Bordeaux. It was under the Pax Romana, in the 1st century AD, that the vine took root around the Gironde estuary. <\/span>Biturica<\/b>, a grape variety probably imported from Great Britain, stood out thanks to its resistance to Bordeaux\u2019s oceanic climate. <\/span>The Cabernet Franc<\/b> and <\/span>Cabernet Sauvignon, <\/b>grape varieties, which are predominant in our modern viticultural landscape, along with Merlot, are considered the descendants of Biturica.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Golden ages and turning points<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Two thousand years<\/a> of political, economic and commercial history unfolded, marked by three major milestones for the Bordeaux wine region. <\/span>The expansion of trade<\/b> to England in the 12th century, <\/span>the quest for quality<\/b> in the 17th and 18th centuries under the Dutch influence, and <\/span>the beginnings of fame <\/b>in the 19th century with the construction of the ch\u00e2teaux and <\/span>the first 1855 classification.<\/a>Of course, the region was not spared from numerous crises, invasions, wars, vine diseases, falling prices\u2026 But Bordeaux winegrowers have always bounced back, inventing, for instance, the <\/span>\u201cbouillie bordelaise\u201d<\/b> (Bordeaux mixture) to fight against mildew or establishing legislation to create<\/span> appellations<\/b> and prevent fraud.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Tutiac epic saga<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Our cooperative takes its roots in the <\/span>Blaye region,<\/b>north of Bordeaux. Here, geological history led to the formation of <\/span>the Butte de Tutiac<\/b>(Tutiac slope), where Saint-Louis had a<\/span> chapel<\/b> built amidst the vines in 1234. This humble monument, which was erected to honour God, has stood witness to hundreds of vintages. The peaceful spirit of the place and its endurance over time inspired us <\/span>to have faith in the future<\/b> and remain loyal to the vineyards. That\u2019s why we decided to name our cooperative \u201cTutiac\u201d. Established in 1974, <\/span>it is a tale of people,<\/b>collective efforts and shared progress, marked by major milestones: 1988 and the construction of our Marcillac cellar a few kilometres from the chapel; 1993, 2005 and 2009, three key stages in our winegrowers\u2019 association; 2018, when producers from the Cave de Lugon et de Sauternes (Lugon and Sauternes cooperative) joined us. Not forgetting a strategic turn of events in 2019, which strengthened the Tutiac brand\u2026 And the story goes on! <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The swallow<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

At the confluence of the Dordogne and Garonne Rivers, lovers of Bordeaux wines will make out the shape of a swallow tail. The estuary thus forms the body of the bird, which was called <\/span>\u201caronde\u201d<\/b> in Old French. Could \u201cGironde\u201d come from that? Whatever the answer, this swallow unites the right and left banks of the Bordeaux vineyards. Just like Tutiac! A bird of good omen, it also embodies <\/span>freedom, loyalty, and enthusiasm<\/b>, qualities in which our cooperative readily recognises itself. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cgabarre\u201d (river barge)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Until the mid-19th century, <\/span>this traditional flat-bottomed boat<\/b> transported barrels of Bordeaux wine throughout the region\u2019s rivers. It was the most effective means to deliver goods to Bordeaux\u2019s trading port, before the barrels were sent abroad. The \u201cgabarre\u201d still evokes memories of this <\/span>indefatigable commercial energy<\/b> which helped our wines take over the world.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The logo<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Pulled by two swallows and pushed by the wind, a \u201cgabarre\u201d transports people and their wine barrels\u2026 In a <\/span>joyful allegory<\/b>, the Tutiac logo reflects the relationship between our winegrowers and nature, as well as <\/span>the ties between geography, history and trade,<\/b> which made Bordeaux wines what they are today. It is an image full of momentum and freedom, while at the same time rooted in <\/span>Bordeaux's time-honoured traditions<\/b> . <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bordeaux through and through!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Simple and direct, our slogan lays claim to <\/span>an entire region and history, alongside all Bordeaux appellations.<\/b> It expresses a positive, unified approach and advocates a distinctive winemaking style. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
